OLYMPIC OPENING CEREMONIES ROUNDUP: BEST OF THE REST

United States:This looks seems to be quite a love it/hate proposition. I personally love it! I think there’s true genius in the way Ralph Lauren has represented the American ethos, from the country club, patrician-casual skirt, pant and wonderfully brass-buttoned navy blazer, to the admittedly enormous player logo, to the faintly militaristic beret, in which I see echoes of such diverse institutions as the Black Panthers, Curtis Sliwa’s Guardian Angels, and the US Army. I feel like some of the animus toward this ensemble is a case of not liking what we see in the mirror. And I really don’t get the hate for the white brogues…I adore them! To each her own, I suppose!

The second photo shows the US team in all its beautiful diversity. Our strength lies in our differences :)

Brazil: They did the best job of punching up the ubiquitous look I like to call “Sporty Stewardess”.

South Korea: They were tops at the look I call “Nautical Barbershop Quartet”.

Sweden: I don’t know…the jaunty shirt works for me for some reason. And the women’s khaki skirt is girlish and cute.

Great Britain: I call this one “The Reverse Monet”; it looked totally lame on TV but I dig the closeup photo. It’s very modern and sporty, and the gold trim is really quite hot! Cheers, mates!

Germany: This is a complete WTF? look! Pink for the women and blue for the men? It’s just so…literal. Achtung, Deutsche-your flag is red, black and gold. The gender-specific baby colors don’t match, so please leave them to the kinder.

2012 OLYMPICS: OPENING CEREMONY FASHION BRONZE MEDAL

And the winner is…Cameroon! Bold colors and patterns, wide sleeves, hats…gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!

So many of the nations’ teams looked like they were on their way to: A) barbershop quartet practice, B) third shift working the desk at Enterprise Rent-a-Car (*cough*Switzerland*cough), or C) Gate 25 at Newark Airport for the LA red-eye…and I mean working, not as a passenger! There was a shocking number of flight attendant looks, with a couple of pilots (Belgium, I’m looking at you) sprinkled in for good measure.

Cameroon, thankfully, couldn’t be bothered with western styles. Would you if your nation’s traditional attire was so beautiful?

Props to all who kept it real, including India, Senegal and Nigeria. You guys ROCK!

And the winner is…The Netherlands! I mean, blue and orange can go awry so easily, but when it’s done correctly it’s so, so gorgeous. I’m loving the natty piped blazers and tennis sweaters, the ties, the trench…on and on. Like their competitors on the Jamaican team, the Dutch athletes could wear these ensembles out on the street and look better than everyone else around them.

Honorable mention to Belgium, who tried something similar and did it pretty well…just not as well as their next door neighbors. They veered a little too close to the airport-themed look that bedeviled many nations’ teams.

The clear winner in this event is…Jamaica! Hip, chic, flattering, interesting…adjectives abound for these two amazing looks. When I heard that Bob Marley’s daughter, Cedella, was the designer, I thought, “Of course she was…that gene pool is overflowing with talent.” Not to mention the fact that the Jamaican team looked like they were having a total blast during the ceremony. Best dressed and most fun to hang out with…GO JAMAICA!! Usain Bolt…call me!
